LETTER: There should be no need for the rest of us to pick up trash

Re: Escarpment cleanup (May 1)
Four hundred-plus volunteers picking up litter along the escarpment is positive news.
But just when we think people are taking better care of our environment, this story reminds us that is not necessarily the case.
When we’re out and about and create some waste, it is stored in my pocket or car till we can reach a waste container.
Many people do the same, but it is obvious, many do not. Some of the more unusual items can be dropped off at the Community Recycling Centres. If it is too large, then call the city and they’ll arrange to pick it up.
Unfortunately, you’ve got pranksters pushing shopping carts and bikes over the edge of the escarpment.
Possibly, it is time to start teaching children not to litter, since apparently, some parents are lacking in this quality themselves.
If this was achievable, in another generation or so, we might really do away with the necessity of 437 people filling over 700 bags of garbage.
