Global Pet Foods in Stoney Creek hopes to lend a helping paw to animals in need next month through Global Pet Foods and Hill’s Ideal Balance’s annual Show Us Your Heart campaign.

The store’s 184 Hwy. 8 and 2273 Rymal Rd. E. locations are collecting donations for the Animal Angel Rescue Foundation (AARF) from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15 as part of the campaign, which raises funds for animal shelters across Canada.

AARF rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes abandoned, abused and unwanted animals.

Stoney Creek resident Deanna Maerz established the not-for-profit foundation in 1998 and works with Hamilton Animal Control to rescue dogs that would otherwise be euthanized. She also helps owner-surrendered dogs.

Maerz makes sure dogs that come into the rescue are fully vetted. She also spends time with them to get to know their personality to ensure the right foster or permanent home match.

“We support AARF because it is a local organization that helps dogs in the community. Deanna is amazing and has spent years of her life helping dogs and we just try to help her out whenever we can,” said store owner Steve Krupp, adding his locations have donated food to and held fundraisers for the foundation in the past. “She works tirelessly – this is not her job, this is what she does in her spare time. It’s amazing that she gives so much time and energy to helping dogs that are in need. It takes a special kind of person to do that.”

Krupp said when community members donate $1 in-store, Global Pet Foods and Hill’s Ideal Balance will match the donation.

Customers who donate $5 or more will receive 10 bonus air miles at the time of donation.

“Any donation is welcome. Everybody generally wants to help out and if people want to help something that’s happening within their own community, this is a great thing to do,” Krupp said. “You’re helping animals that really can’t help themselves. These animals are completely dependant on donations and people like Deanna to help them out.”

Krupp said with help from the community, the locations raised more than $1,600 combined for AARF last year.

This year, the goal is $2,000.

Krupp said it’s extremely important to support organizations that help animals in need.

“Organizations like AARF, people like Deanna and shelters across Canada drastically reduce the amount of animals we have out on the street. We still hear about dogs, cats and other animals being dumped by the side of the road, but hopefully they wind up in a shelter, which then finds them a proper home,” he said. “If you don’t have these institutions, then what happens to those animals? They’re just going to live horrible lives – God only knows what’s going to happen to them. These institutions offer a safe haven for animals in need and often mean the difference between life and death.”

Global Pet Foods 184 Hwy. 8 and 2273 Rymal Rd. E. locations will be collecting donations for AARF from Feb. 1 to Feb. 15.

The annual Show Us Your Heart campaign has raised over $570,000 for animal shelters across Canada since 2006.
