Residents at a central Mountain seniors building now have easy access to a wide range of health and lifestyle programs.
In an area of the CityHousing Hamilton building at 395 Mohawk Rd. East that was formerly an apartment unit, they can now use services provided by the Seniors Managing in Life Experiences (SMILE) wellness program.
It’s the sixth SMILE program in a city building and was the result of a request from more than 50 residents.
“It’s really tenant-driven,” said Brenda Osborne, CEO of CityHousing Hamilton.
Beverly Wilson, a volunteer leader at the building known as Mohawk Gardens, said the programs will help residents with a variety of ailments and help the rest with maintaining general good health.
“It’s getting people out who normally stay in their apartment. They’re socializing,” said Wilson. “I think it’s the most awesome thing we’re ever done.”
Physiotherapy, diabetes clinics, footcare and reflexology are among the offerings currently available. They are made available at little or no cost to the residents.
Dimentia awareness workshops by the Alzheimer’s Society and VON clinics are coming soon.
