Census confirms major growth on south-west Mountain

Population shrinking on parts of east Mountain

By Mark Newman, News Staff

Recently released census data shows the south-west Mountain leads the city in population growth.

The Stats Canada figures show the number of people living south of Stone Church Road roughly between Upper Wellington and the Ancaster boarder has grown anywhere from a few percentage points to more than 25 percent (depending on the neighbourhood) between 2006 and the spring of 2011.

Several areas between the Mountain brow and Mohawk Road along with the south-east Mountain showed no population growth or saw a decrease according to the numbers.

The Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton has reviewed the census tracks for the five year period and estimates there were 39,249 residents in Ward 6 on the east Mountain last year.

That’s a drop of 1.4 percent from 2006.

Ward 7, the central Mountain, saw a population increase of 3.4 percent to about 62,179.

On the west Mountain, Ward eight’s population jumped by 2.7 percent to about 48,807.

Overall, the City of Hamilton saw an increase of 3.1 percent to 519,989 residents.

Nationally, Canada’s population grew by 5.9 percent (the highest among G-8 countries) to 33,476,688

Ontario’s population grew by 5.7 percent, the lowest growth since the early ‘80s.
