Real McCoys preparing for playoff with Whitby

With two weekends remaining in the 2012-13 Allan Cup Hockey schedule, Dundas Real McCoys trail the second-place Whitby Dunlops by one point in the race for second place in the league standings.

However, it appears it would take a wholesale collapse by the Dunlops for Dundas to overtake them. Dundas has two games left against Brantford and the Dunlops, while Whitby has four games remaining.

The McCoys play Brantford Blast Friday night, Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Brantford Civic Centre and wind up their season the following week when they host the Dunlops on Friday, Feb. 15 at 7:45 p.m. at J.L. Grightmire Arena.
Last Friday, Nick Smith netted a pair of goals as the Real McCoys earned their 13th victory of the season by defeating the Welland Whalers 4-3 in a shootout at Grightmire Arena.

“We played as well as we needed to, to earn the victory, however, Welland is a young club and they just keep coming at you all night,” said Dundas coach Ken Mann.
“Brantford will be a good test for us this week. We play the top two teams in the League as we close out the schedule.”

After last weekend’s action, Whitby and Dundas remained a point apart in second and third spots with 27 and 26 points apiece. Brantford, despite the Friday night loss, remains in top spot with 36 points.

“We have one Ontario Hockey Association player registration card left, and we are going to use it to sign a player who can step up right now, and give us our best chance to win,” said general manager Don Robertson. “It’s clear that we will play Whitby in the first round of the playoffs and must be ready for them.”

In addition to Smith’s power-play goal and winner in the shootout, Dundas got single goals from Justin Davis and Cam Watson. Drew Minor scored twice for Welland.

Dan Marwick added the other.
