Lucas Pozzobon’s powerplay goal off the goalpost at 19:59 of the second period carried Guelph Hurricanes to a 2-1 victory over the Ancaster Avalanche in the first of a home-and-home Greater Ontario Junior B Hockey League pre-season series last night in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
Ancaster’s pre-season record falls to 3-3 in Golden Horseshoe Conference pre-season play. Game two of the series is tonight, Friday, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hespeler Arena.
Blake Luscombe opened the scoring for Ancaster (formerly the Stoney Creek Warriors) on a powerplay at 7:25 of the first period. Jeremy Currie’s play in the Ancaster net for the first half of the game was the key to the Avs maintaining a one-goal differential until late in the period. The Avalanche held off Guelph until 15:27 of the period when Chris Vanooteghem tied the score for the Hurricanes.
Tonight’s game sets the stage for the Avalanches’ Golden Horseshoe Conference home opener against the Buffalo Blades in the Firestone Arena on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Several promotions for the coming season will be announced prior to the match, which marks the return of Junior B hockey to Ancaster after a 20-year absence.
The Avalanche will play eight other teams in the Golden Horseshoe Conference three times at home throughout the 24-game home schedule leading up to the playoffs and a run for the Captain James T. Sutherland Cup.
The league consists of the Buffalo Blades, Caledonia Pro Fit Corvairs, Fort Erie Meteors, Niagara Falls Canucks, Port Colborne Pirates, St. Catharines Falcons, Thorold Blackhawks, Welland Junior Canadians, and the Avalanche.
