Davis, Novak lead Dundas past the Blast in last night’s AAA playoff action

Justin Davis from the left side of the Brantford Blast net lifted the puck home at 7:18 of the third period as Dundas Real McCoys battled their way to a 5-3 victory in the second game of the best-of-seven John Ross Robertson Cup final Sunday afternoon in the JL Grightmire Arena.

Dundas leads the series 2-0 in games with game three at Brantford on Friday (March 15) at 7:30 p.m. The fourth match is back at Dundas on Sunday, March 17. Game time is 7:30 p.m. The winner of this series advances against the Kenora Thistles for the Renwick Cup, on the weekend of March 29-30 at Kenora, Ontario.

The McCoys were backed by solid netminding, for the second consecutive game, by 19-year-old Brock Novak of the Burlington Cougars of the Ontario Provincial Junior A Hockey League. Novak, an affiliate player, was pressed into service when the club’s three regular goaltenders, Bryan Worosz, Jeff Maund, and Neil Clelland were sidelined by injuries.

On the afternoon, Davis scored three times, once even-strength, then on a powerplay for the game-winner, and finally into the empty net at 19:41 of the third period. Darryl Smith picked a goal and three assists with Scott Stafford adding the other goal. Jay McKee set up two of the Dundas scoring plays. Mike Burgoyne, Ryan Healy, and Mark Taylor replied for Brantford.
