Ancaster tames Wolves to claim gold in Brantford With a silver medal finish in Barrie, Ancaster was poised and determined to win gold at the Wayne Gretzky International Hockey Tournament in Brantford.
With victories over Hamilton Cyclones, London Hawks and Richmond Hill Stars, followed by a tie with the Syracuse Blazers, the team finished with a 3-0-1 record and a berth in the semifinals.
A seesaw battle with the Hamilton Spitfires made a semifinal game to remember. Trailing in the third, Ancaster pulled its goalie with minutes left and scored to force overtime. Midway through the three-on-three, a timely pass to a streaking Avalanche forward, set up the game winning goal. With the gold medal in sight, the only thing that stood in Ancaster’s way was the undefeated Waterloo Wolves. Ancaster struck first and didn’t let up. Waterloo scored a late goal in the third, but Ancaster stayed strong.
