Some Les Miserables cast members from the Young People’s Theatre take a bow after performance last year.

13 The Musical ready to hit the stage

Last year the Young People’s Theatre program presented Les Miserables.

What next?

This is the very question the directors Erin Bree Pierce and Katie Moulden asked themselves.

“After doing such a high scale production with a 14-piece orchestra, we knew that our next show had to be just as challenging, but completely opposite to Les Mis,” said Pierce.

Pierce has been running programs through her company, EBP Productions, for 16 years and is thrilled to present such a modern piece of work with a fine group of students.
13 The Musical, written by Jason Robert Brown, is the “Rent” for kids. Although the actors play their own age on stage with everyday teen issues, the music is difficult and the story line is fluid.

EBP Productions has chosen to thread scenes together with a simple modern set that never moves. This is the challenge of 13.

“The students get it,” said Moulden. “They see that this production is every bit as difficult as putting Les Miserables together with a big orchestra. We’re really proud of them and can’t wait for show time.”

13 The Musical runs at Melrose United Church Performance Hall, Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m., Feb. 2 at 1 p.m. and Feb. 2 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased by calling 905-617-2733. For more information, visit www.ebpproductions.com.
