A vital medicine

MaryBeth McCuen was only 25 weeks pregnant when she gave birth to Sam in 2009 at McMaster University Medical Centre. He spent the first six months of his life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Sam was so fragile in those early days that MaryBeth couldnít even touch her son, but she could express milk, a vital ìmedicineî for her son in the first months. Today, Sam is four and healthy. Marybeth, her husband Mike and Sam returned to Mac recently to help hospital president Peter Fitzgerald open the Motherís Own Milk room, a sterile, temperature controlled room and freezer where mothers of preemies can safely store breast milk.
