Lynne Kittredge-Fox has a mighty goal — to help children around the world have the books they need to learn to read.
As a children’s author, Dundas daycare owner and mother of two, Kittredge-Fox knows the importance of reading and story telling for young, growing minds.
“We take it for granted that the tools for reading and writing are provided to us,” said Kittredge-Fox. “But there are kids all over the world who simply need more books. Reading is a crucial part of their development.”
A self-published author, Kittredge-Fox has already donated hundreds of her books to schools, hospitals, libraries and to countries as far away as Nairobi and Thailand. But when she realized the cost of printing and shipping the books would become too large to sustain on her own, she came up with a creative way to raise funds.
“I have so many musician friends in the community, so I thought, why not ask them for help?”
And help they did. Musicians, mostly from the Hamilton area, quickly signed on to donate one song each for a compilation CD entitled A Mighty Tribe. Comprised of original songs and traditional music, A Mighty Tribe is the kind of children’s CD that is definitely adult-friendly. Hamilton-based musician and artist Tom Wilson, whom Kittredge-Fox has collaborated with on two books, not only puts a new spin on the classic This Old Man, but also painted four new works for the cover of the CD.
The CD also features performances by Michelle Titian, The Killin’ Time Band, Peg and Willy, Harlan Pepper, Scott Hunter, Mimi Shaw, Pailface Brad, Dawn and Marra, Brian Siegel, Raina Krangle, Matthew and Margot de Zoete, Bernie Hudecki, Kim Koren, Gordie Tapp, The Dinner Belles, Gord Lewis, Dylan Hudecki and the Dundas Montessori School’s 2013 Casa North.
Money raised from CD sales will help offset the cost of worldwide book donations. In addition, for every CD sold, $1 goes to the Telling Tales Festival, an annual story-telling event at Westfield Heritage Village.
A Mighty Tribe is available on www.bookbus.ca and will soon be available in local Chapters and other businesses. A CD release party is planned for the Central Branch of Hamilton Public Library on June 18 from 6-9 p.m. The event will include live performances by Wilson and many of the artists featured on the CD. There will be a craft table for kids, a book table, snacks and CDs for sale. Admission is free.
