Marie Phillips, Erin Ridpath and Shayne Riley lost their long locks last week for a fundraising campaign they call The Other Big C.

Phillips said, unfortunately, all three women are way too familiar with The Big C, or cancer.

“The disease has stricken many of our loved ones,” she said. “We decided to change The Big C from cancer, to  cut, to raise awareness and funds needed for Juravinski Hospital and Cancer Centre.”

Phillips started growing her hair five years ago, after a colleague was diagnosed with breast cancer. She wanted to donate her hair and make a small difference in the life of someone facing hair loss due to cancer treatments. On July 24, Phillips reached her goal.

“I’m a little nervous but excited,” she said as she waited for the first of her locks to be lopped off by a hairstylist at Hair and Nails for You. “I’m also blown away by the level of support we’re getting. Half my office is here.”

Phillips works at IPC Securities, where colleagues contributed money that was doubled by the company for a contribution of $750.

Ridpath was pregnant with her now five-year-old son when she started growing her hair.

“I first did so out of convenience, and then decided I would test myself to see just how long I could let it go, said Ridpath. “Finally I decided I would pay it forward by growing my hair to donate for someone in need and to inspire the importance of giving in my children.”

Family friend and St. Jean de Brébeuf graduate Shayne Riley joined  Phillips and Ridpath at the last moment for her second hair donation.

“I’m a little bit nervous, but it’s going to a good cause,” she said.
