Price of Spring Valley Arena upgrade jumps to $1.2 million

Ancaster News

It’s going to cost a lot more to improve Ancaster’s Spring Valley Arena than city officials previously thought.

Ancaster councillor Lloyd Ferguson is proposing a motion that will add $750,000 more in funding to the already budgeted $400,000 that had been allocated  last year.

Ferguson confirmed renovating and upgrading the dressing rooms at the arena is now being budgeted at about $1.2 million. The councillor’s notice of motion identifies the money would be taken from development charge and capital project accounts.

“(The cost) is not on the levy,” said Ferguson.

The councillor and Ancaster minor hockey association officials had identified the poor condition of the washrooms and dressing rooms at the 40-year-old facility two years ago.

Ferguson said at the time the dressing rooms were “in poor shape” and were in need of improvements.

Currently the dressing rooms are about 35 per cent smaller than dressing rooms in other similar facilities.

Ancaster minor hockey officials had proposed reconfiguring the four existing dressing rooms into two larger rooms, which would add two new dressing rooms, a new referee room, basic upgrades to the dressing room washrooms, the public washrooms and lobby area.

Ferguson managed to get the estimated $400,000 funding for the project.

But last week he said city staff told him the price had increased to $1.2 million.

“I was blown away too by the number,” he said.

Ferguson held off on converting his notice of motion to a motion and putting it before council, suggesting his request for more money may not be approved.

“I suspect I will have a tough time (getting approval),” he said. “I may have to defer it.”
