Winona Elementary School shows its support for Hamilton Food Share

By Laura Lennie, News Staff

Winona Elementary School is doing its part to bring awareness to hunger and ensure families in need don’t go without this summer.

The school’s student leadership group, comprised of 29 students from grades four to eight, recently organized a spring candy grams campaign benefitting Hamilton Food Share. Members sold and delivered more than 1,000 Double Lollies to students.

The group also has been selling TCBY frozen yogurt throughout the school year in support of food share.

Both initiatives helped raise $1,000 for the non-profit charitable organization.

Group representative and Grade 5 teacher Alexandra LeBlanc said members worked hard to promote the cause and initiatives through announcements and posters.

The school is always looking for ways to contribute to the community in a positive way, she said.

“Food banks often garner support during holidays like Christmas and Thanksgiving, but we know their shelves need to be filled year-round. After doing some research, we found Hamilton Food Share, right here in our community,” LeBlanc said. “Every $1 donated to them enables them to purchase $5 worth of food. We thought this would be the best way for us to make a strong impact on our community.”

Food share resource development director Rachel O’Reilly said in Hamilton, more than 6,000 children use a food bank every month.

For the more than 17,000 individuals who use a food bank, getting through the summer months is especially hard, she said.

“School is going to be out soon, but as the school year comes to a close, so do the food programs that many schools offer. Added food costs put even more pressure on low-income families who already don’t have enough food to eat,” O’Reilly said. “We are so grateful for this donation. This donation will go a long way in helping to feed the many who go hungry.”
