Hilda Fairhurst feels blessed to have lived the life she has so far.
The long-time Stoney Creek resident celebrated her 100th birthday with family and friends at a special party held in her honour last Saturday at Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 622.
Fairhurst officially turned 100 on May 4.
“I’m very fortunate,” she said during the party. “I have an amazing family, great friends and have had a wonderful life. Here’s hoping that my good fortune continues for more years to come.”
Fairhurst still lives independently.
She remains active and sometimes can be seen walking down King Street toward the legion, where she has been a member of the ladies auxiliary for 46 years and meets up with friends to chat over coffee or play cards twice a week. Fairhurst also is a member of Stoney Creek Seniors Club 60, where she tries her luck at bingo each Monday.
She has called the area home for almost 60 years, having moved from a farming community in York near Caledonia to Stoney Creek in 1956 with her late husband, Harold, daughter Elaine and son Leslie.
The family came to the area for employment opportunities.
Fairhurst started working at the Stoney Creek Dairy in 1957. She scooped ice cream and served customers in the dining room and store for more than 20 years.
Harold also worked for the dairy, delivering milk to customers in and around the east end of Stoney Creek until his retirement in 1972.
Fairhurst remembers her time at the dairy as if it were yesterday.
“I served a lot of children and families at the dairy during those years and enjoyed every minute of it,” Fairhurst said. “I have many fond memories. It was very nice working there.”
Fairhurst said she feels lucky to have reached the age of 100 and made so many friends and memories over the years.
“I try to stay as active as I can,” she said, when asked the secret to her longevity. “When I was in better health, I used to try and help others with different things whenever I could and I think that’s good for the soul. Staying active and doing things for people when you can, I think, are the keys to a long and happy life.”
