Sydenham Road lane reopening

Dundas Star News

 By Craig Campbell, News Staff

All three lanes of Sydenham Road were expected to be open this week, after a March 31 rock slide shut down one lane for more than a month. The City of Hamilton kept the lane closed to traffic while the escarpment rock face was assessed and a scaling project to remove more rock from the side of the escarpment was undertaken to make the area more safe.

Darrell Smith, they city’s manager of roads and maintenance, said last week the scaling operation was complete and workers were clearing material out of the ditch.

“Barring weather issues, we should be complete by Tuesday,” Smith said, adding the closed lane will probably be re-opened sometime the next day – Wednesday. April 30.

Smith said he wouldn’t know the cost of the project until it is completely done.

It’s the first time rock was removed from the face of the escarpment along Sydenham Road to improve safety and prevent potential rock slides in at least two and a half years.

Freezing and thawing caused by extreme weather conditions were blamed for the March 31 morning rock slide.

There were no reported injuries, collisions or damage as a result. City crews closed a lane of traffic to clear debris, but kept the lane closed for safety reasons and for a analysis of the escarpment face which led to the decision to remove more rock.

“It’s going to come down anyway, this is a safe way to do it,” Smith said.
