Hamilton pilot project accepts bulky, hard plastic items for recycling

Hamilton Mountain News

Plastic products not normally accepted in the city’s blue box program can be dropped off at the Mountain recycling centre under a pilot project.

For a limited time, the City of Hamilton will be accepting bulky, rigid, hard plastic items that are not accepted in the blue box.

Items being accepted temporarily include: large plastic toys; plastic buckets and pails; plastic crates and trays; plastic garbage cans; plastic laundry baskets; plastic lawn furniture; plastic pet carriers; plastic pots; plastic playhouses; recycling bins; and totes and tool cases.

Normally such material heads straight to the landfill.

“Until recently, there was no market for the material,” said Emil Prpic, the city’s manager of recycling and waste disposal.

Two companies recently set up shop, he said, and this is a slower time of year at the recycling centre so there is room to store the hard plastic material.

Prpic said the city could make a profit from selling the items and offset other recycling costs. A decision will be made in the spring about whether to continue collecting the items.

The Mountain Community Recycling Centre is located at 37 Kilbride Rd.
