The party to open the 36th year of the event which attempts to get Hamiltonians out of hibernation runs from 3-10 p.m. It will include live music and DJs, outdoor art installations, live mural-painting, horse-and-wagon rides, warming food and drinks, and hands-on activities for the whole family.
All activities are free, except skate rental fees and refreshments for sale. Pier 8 is located at 47 Discovery Dr.
Winterfest events include family-friendly activities at neighbourhood parks, world music, jazz, and classical performances, a winter eco-hike, ice fishing and curling, a pancake breakfast, painting lessons, a knitting drive and contemporary art exhibitions. For details, see hamiltonwinterfest.ca.
One of the events is line dancing for people 55 and older from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the Sackville Hill Seniors Recreation Centre, 780 Upper Wentworth St. Cost is $5; advanced registration is required. Email Kbulyaki@hamilton.ca or call 905-546-2541.
Also Saturday, from noon-2 p.m., it’s the Taoist Tai Chi Centre Soup Fest. The fundraiser for the charitable organization is open to all ages; cost is between $3 and $5 for soup and roll or bread. The centre is located at 86 Hester St.
