Seussical the Musical comes to Bishop Tonnos

Ancaster News

Seussical is bringing fantastical, magical, musical excitement to Bishop Tonnos Catholic Secondary School.

Based on the works of Dr. Seuss, one of the world’s best loved musicals debuts on May 1, with a 7 p.m. curtain call.

Performers of all ages are excited to portray the characters from the familiar Dr. Seuss fables. Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty originally brought the beloved Dr. Seuss characters to life, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination, named Jojo.

The colorful characters transport audiences from the Jungle of Nool, to the Circus McGurkus, to the invisible world of the Whos.

The author-approved edition of one of Broadway’s legendary musicals has been specially adapted to meet the needs of young performers, while carefully maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant that discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many “thinks.”

Horton faces a double challenge, not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him.

Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

A Titans Theatre production, directed by Robert Lombardi, is supported by an entire production team of dedicated and talented young people to draw the audience in.

“The performance highlights many key messages,” Lombardi said.

Among them, A persons a person, no matter how small, a song sung by Horton throughout the show, delivers a strong anti-bullying message.

Seussical is presented through a special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). The book is written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty with music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The musical was co-conceived by Eric Idle.

The curtain rises Wednesday, May 1 with performances continuing until Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m.For tickets, call 905-523-2331 Bishop Tonnos is located at 100 Panabaker Drive in Ancaster.
