Hamilton Winterfest increases focus on arts

Ancaster News

Hamilton Winterfest kicks off at Pier 8 on Feb. 1 from 3-10 p.m.

There will be live music and DJs, skating, outdoor art installations, warming food and drinks, and interactive activities that showcase Hamilton-area talent.

All activities are free, except skate rental fees, and refreshments are for sale.

Pier 8 is located at 47 Discovery Dr.

This will be the 36th year of Winterfest, a program which attempts to draw people out of their homes during a time of hibernation and celebrates the beauty of the winter season.

This year's kick-off event reflects an expanded Winterfest program, with more arts and cultural partners and small businesses.

Winterlore, a temporary art exhibition on display exclusively at the kick-off, will feature the work of Floyd Elzinga, Hitoko Okada, the TH&B Collective (Simon Frank, Ivan Jurakic, Dave Hind and Tor Lukasik-Foss), Thea Haines and Tonya Hart, who draw on winter folklore, stories and symbols from around the world.

Also, visitors can watch Winterlore artists Jacqui Oakley and Jamie Lawson paint a live folklore inspired mural in the Waterfront Trust Centre.
