Good Morning Chicago hopes to wake up record labels to its sound

Stoney Creek News

Good Morning Chicago band members Marco Biundo, Sandro Mastromatteo, Tyler D’Costa and Christian Cashin play by one motto.

“Doing well is a bonus,” said the Stoney Creek pop/rock band’s lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Biundo. “We always look at it like, ‘Let’s have a good time and see where this goes.”

Biundo, 17, Mastromatteo, 16, D’Costa, 18, and Cashin, 17, have been having a good time instrumentally for a number of years.

Biundo, D’Costa and Cashin attended St. Paul Catholic Elementary School and jammed together occasionally, while also taking part in other musical endeavours.

Biundo became friends with lead guitarist and back up vocalist Mastromatteo in Grade 11 at Bishop Ryan Catholic Secondary School, before introducing him to Cashin, a drummer.

The trio had great chemistry, but was missing an essential element – a bassist.

“Originally, there was a different bass player, but he didn’t work out, so Christian suggested asking Tyler from back in the day,” Biundo said. “Since Tyler joined the band, things have skyrocketed. That’s when things really took off.”

D’Costa said everything came together perfectly.

“Everything was meant to happen for a reason,” the Bishop Ryan graduate said. “The steps I took in my life – I’ve been in other bands – they were all leading towards this. This was the final masterpiece.”

The band members decided on the name Good Morning Chicago, after being inspired by words uttered by Mastromatteo during a school trip last year to Chicago.

“Sandro and I had this really nice hotel room with a big bay window right in front of the Chicago interstate and every morning, Sandro would wake up, take a shower and for some reason felt the urge to open the big bay window, flash the highway and scream, ‘Good Morning Chicago!’” Biundo laughed. “One day, we were talking about the experience at band practice and Christian said, ‘That would make for a killer band name.’”

The members hit the studio to lay down two tracks – Done and Call the Doctor – and posted them on YouTube.

Before they knew it, their Good Morning Chicago Facebook page went from 100 to 500 likes in under 24 hours.

“Our songs also are on iTunes,” said Biundo, adding the band is gearing up to release its new single – One Nite Staci – this month.

The members have performed for audiences at the Casbah in Hamilton and for Warner Music Canada’s Ron Lopata.

They also won a Battle of the Bands show last month at the Opera House in Toronto.

“Our recordings are good, but we’re really known for our live presence – we have a great time.

“There were 35 bands there and most of them were from the GTA area, so being from Hamilton, we were kind of the outsiders,” he said. “We never expected to win. It was a great experience and we could never have asked for anything better than that.”

The band also has been asked to do a circuit of shows for a number of record labels, including Virgin, Underground Operations and Universal. The members have already performed at the Virgin Mobile Mod Club and are looking forward to taking their act on the road this summer, as they tour southern Ontario.

Biundo, Mastromatteo, D’Costa and Cashin agreed they feel more like brothers than band mates.

“You wake up in the morning and you’re stoked for band practice,” Cashin added. “I couldn’t imagine doing this with any other three people, it’s just so much fun.”

D’Costa said the band is enjoying the ride.

Biundo, who likens Good Morning Chicago’s sound to bands like Blink 182, Green Day and Sum 41, said he feels the music industry has taken a wrong turn when it comes to music.

“There’s a lot of auto tune, it’s a lot of over processed stuff,” he said. “We kind of want to just bring that whole genre back because we feel it was more real and it’s a good time. We want to bring back music as itself.”
